When I tentatively tuned into to Tim Ferriss’ interview with WWE (Wrestling World Entertainment) star Triple-H, the last thing I expected to hear were lessons in marketing. Yet less than 5 minutes in, I had pulled out my notebook and started scribbling out notes.
So, here are my 5 (totally serious) lessons for Marketers from the amazing world of WWE and Triple-H:
“Never be satisfied with what you do. If you don’t do it well, don’t do it”
This was one of Triple-H’s personal axioms, but works so well for our industry. How many half-baked social media accounts, websites or broken emails have you seen? Examples are legion, and whilst I am a big supporter of starting small and testing concepts, you can’t leave you experiments in the public domain – they will be found and they will make you look stupid.
“What are the strengths that you can focus on….”
There are thousands of marketing opportunities from social media to television and not even Triple-H can body slam them all. Resist the urge to do everything and remember the reality is some things are more relevant than others to your business. Find the core components that you have the skills to activate and that deliver results and focus on them.
“It’s not about spectacular moves, it’s about the drama of the match”
It’s easy to create one great thing, but that’s never going to make for the most successful marketing strategy. Marketing has to be integrated across channels and more importantly across all of the touch points with your customer. And yes, that includes quality.
“Tomorrow there will be another guy who can do that move better than you”
You need to be aware of the world around you, competitors, industry trends and the ever changing face of consumer behaviour. Just because you launched a campaign that won an award, or drove record levels of traffic to your website it doesn’t mean you’re set for life. If you get complacent somebody with more passion and drive will always overtake you.
“It’s the phoney fight business” you have got to laugh at it occasionally.
Yes, good marketing can make or break the success of your business, but ultimately it’s just about making stuff up.
